Hurry up Spring!!!

The other day while I was checking out Garance Dore and The Sartorialist, I realized I hadn’t written about fashion in a long time. It’s so funny that this winter seems so neverending and in the fashion world, Spring 2011 has already been shown and done and we are already into pre-fall 2012. Hello, the snow of Fall/Winter 2010 hasn’t even melted yet!

It’s just so fascinating to me that there are people (the stylemakers) who dictate what is going to be “in” in the coming seasons, when the season has not even come yet. Reading those fashion blogs reminded me that we will one day get out of this dreary winter and bloom again in the spring…And who doesn’t want to shed these thick parkas and mitts and put on some capris and sandals! ?

This year I’ve decided (well actually I guess it was decided for me) that my look is going to be “70’s bohemian” for day….and “70’s evening glam” for night.

So what does this mean? Well, let’s see…when I was in Hawaii this past January, I picked up some fab (and cheap!) Calvin Klein faded jeans (which if I don’t cut them will suit the bellbottom-y look I think) I just need some kind of peasant top and some platform-y suede clogs or sandals… Oh, I also want to do the nautical look…which means stripes and a lot of navy and white (with splashes of red or yellow thrown in for good measure). I’ll forgo the sailor hat (that I used to totally have when I was a teen. ).

For evening wear, I’m loving that Studio 54 evening look, all glam and whatnot (haha I said “whatnot”) with one-piece strapless jumpsuits with gartered bottoms in satin or silk, in electric colors (much like that DVF pic I posted earlier) .

I guess florals are also in (but florals always seem to be “in” in the springtime) BUT they are even more awesome when the florals are giant flower belts (a la Marc Jacobs). OMG, this belt is so fab!

I still also like that Madmen-esque, ladylike look too…is that still in?

I once saw this picture of Jackie O (actually she was Jackie Kennedy then!) in the early days of “Camelot”, where she wore this peach sleeveless, v-neck dress, that had a bow at the waist and white gloves. Now, I know she had fabulous style and wore even better outfits after this (hello pillbox and pucci, anyone?) But this outfit stuck in my mind for some reason. I loved it!

And was so inspired by it. In fact, this was the color of my grad dress…and I also wore white gloves! LOL. I should totally look for that pic.

Anyways, it looks like this is going to be a fantastic fashion season…once the snow melts.

Can't wait for Spring 2011!!!!

OMG. Love this DVF dress for Spring 2011! My fave color and a hood!!! I am loving the 70's inspired evening glam this season...

more to come...

Let's Dance! Where? On the Floor (of course!)

Hi Friends! Well I thought I'd put this video in because it's seriously my fave song right now! It just makes me want to dance! I was just at a friend's wedding social last Saturday and this was the song we were waiting for all night. When it finally came on, it was SO awesome! (I only wish the dj played it sooner!) Anyways, we had a GREAT time! I hope you enjoy it too!

PS. I got this from youtube. I hope I don't get in trubs. (I'm scared of internet authority as well).

Glee - Duh, Winning!

(Okay, it was inevitable that after all this Charlie Sheen nonsense that has been going on, it would eventually trickle into my little blog. So, here it is - plus, for some reason, that line's been in my head ever since I saw it on SNL and The Soup. It annoys me and makes me laugh at the same time.) Now, on to my Gleecap!

On this episode of Glee we had a little bit of everything: death & love, meanness & sadness, funniness and triumph.

Death & Love
The show begins with an immediate song solo, Maroon 5's "Misery" by Blaine (with the rest of the Warblers, including Kurt as the back-up), after which finally, FINALLY, Kurt voices what we've all been thinking - Blaine and his solo hogging. He's tired of just being a "pip" to Blaine's "Gladys Knight". YES! And props to Blaine for noticing Pavarotti's birdcage cover as being "Burberry-esque" (though, I would have expected Kurt to have the real thing. What? Burberry doesn't make birdcage covers?!). Alas, even with his golden cage and burberry-esque water and food feeders (yes I noticed those too) poor Pavarotti drops dead which sends Kurt into mourning (with a fab black outfit, btw) and an even more fab version of Paul McCartney's "Blackbird". AAahhhh! I have loved this song for like EVER. (Well...more like 3 weeks, after I heard that guy and girl perform it on American Idol when they were at the Beatles Love audition challenge thing.) Anyhoo, it was beautiful and seeing the actual moment of Blaine falling for Kurt...loved it. Finally! Blaine loves Kurt! Yay! After months of waiting, Kurt's unrequited love is finally...requited! And sealed with a kiss! (BTW, a REAL  kiss, not a peck and then cut to commercial. A real kiss!! ) PS. This is the kiss that Jack was waiting for on one of the episodes of Will & Grace. (Props to anyone who remembers what I'm talking about)

Meanness & Sadness
We see that Quinn is continuing on her mission of becoming prom queen (and apparently, a successful real estate agent). Anyhoo, she's decided to keep her "enemy closer" by stating that she will help Rachel write an original song for Regionals (since Sue had declared "World War Sue" on New Directions by forging a letter from My Chemical Romance banning the Glee club from performing their song at Regionals.) Also from her "playing dirty play book"  She fills Britt ("Tweedle Dum") and Santana's ("Tweedle Fake Boobs") lockers with dirt that spills out on them when they open them up, to which Brittany exclaims "I don't even remember putting that in there!" Oh, Brittany! Sue also randomly throws sticks at Mercedes. (Mean, but strangely funny!) Meanwhile, Rachel knows somethings up when she sees Quinn and Finn in the hallway. She questions Quinn who confirms that they are back together.(Ugh.) She tells Rachel that she will get Finn, and they will live (happily? ever after), while Rachel will always be heartbroken and that she doesn't belong there. (Was that a backhanded compliment?) This of course inspires Rachel to write her own song.

Funniness
While Rachel is writing her own song, the rest of the New Directions try their hand at original song writing as well. We begin with Santana's "Trouty Lips" a song, obviously dedicated to Sam. HAHAHA!!! Trouty lips, grouper lips, salamander lips...I don't know which one was the best! I also lol'd at Mike Chang's faces at Sam during the song. Then there was Puck's"Big Ass...Heart" dedicated to Lauren. We also got a great song from Mercedes  which was aptly titled "Hell to the No"! (I love when all the Glee kids enjoy themselves singing!)

Triumph
Finally Regionals! After a thankfully short performance by Sue's Aural Intensity group who's song "Jesus is a Friend of Mine" (?) was a blatant pandering to the judges: Kathy Griffin, channeling her best Sarah Palin-esque impression (right down to the glasses!), Loretta Devine, as Sister Mary Something, aka: Whoopie in Sister Act (1&2) and Rod Remington ("Can I add a dash of Rod to this lady soup?), the Warblers were next to perform and this time Blaine shared the spotlight on a duet with Kurt! "Candles" by Hey Monday. It was nice - even though I didn't know the song (I'm so used to the Warblers and their Top 40's!) But I didn't have to wait long - this was followed by a (Top 40's) Pink tune "Raise your Glass", which was good too.

And finally, New Directions. So, tonight's episode of Glee was entitled "Original Song".  Truthfully when they first spoke of it, I wasn't all that excited to hear the "original songs". However having said that, I had picked up Glee - The Music,Vol. 5 a couple of weeks ago, so I had heard the songs they were going to perform and I actually liked them! (I almost have both songs memorized...yes, I'm a nerd.) and I also have to say, that after seeing them performed by New Directions, I like them even more. Yes, Rachel was Rachel with her over-emoting and teary performances (she said herself she cries at every solo!) but this performance, was perfect for her and it was lovely. I almost wanted to cry too. (But I'm emotional like that.) Then they sang "Loser Like Me" which was also perfect and fun, right down to the end with them showering the audience with confetti slushies. Loved it!
And yay! Our Gleeks won and will be on their way to Nationals in New York! Unfortunately, Kurt & Blaine (and the rest of the Warblers) didn't win, but hey - at least they have each other! And Sue? Well, Sue didn't win either...BUT, she did punch out the governor's wife. hahahaha....

And lastly, a touching MVP award speech by Rachel, who's always just wanted to "feel special and feel chosen" (aw...)

This left me with a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart and a tiny tear in my eye...I think I can handle a mini hiatus until April now...Until then, my fab gleeks!

Forever 21! Forever 21!

Yay! Finally, Forever 21 has opened in Winnipeg!

Though I didn’t join the throngs of girls lined up on Saturday morning for their grand opening (my sister said the salespeople were hyping up the crowd chanting “Forever 21! Forever 21!”), I’m definitely excited that there is now another option for trendy, inexpensive clothes and accessories! Actually, I’m more excited about the fact that there is a section for us slightly healthier girls! The section is bigger than most though, still tiny in relation to the rest of the store. The store itself, I’m told, is the biggest in Canada (yay for that!) and even includes a guy section. There seems to be a ton of salespeople, which is awesome for the pay line-ups. I’m anticipating that since this is all still a new novelty, the line-ups will continue for a little while. So far, the store is nicely organized and clean, though I didn’t really walk around too much. What I did see though, I was happy about. I can see spending many an hour here, exploring everything they have to offer.

In a world inundated with “skinny girl clothes”, it was refreshing to see a large(r than most) “healthy girl” section. Also, it was nice that it wasn’t immediately obvious that it was a different section from the rest of the store (unless you looked above where the sign said Forever 21+). This however, confused some of the shoppers as I noticed that not everyone in that section was…healthy. This was also fine as I’m sure people would have noticed that the sizing was different once they looked at the tags. There was no need for this one girl who stage-whispered to her mother “Mom! This section is for fat people!” as she side-long glanced over to me. I stared back and gave her face. Luckily for her she quickly took off with her mother in tow. Be-atch.
Despite that little “reminder” that not everyone is created equal (I suppose not everyone can be as fabulous as me!), I found a cool, colorful leopard print sheer flowy tank that I plan to wear with black leggings in the spring! There was more stuff too, but I will have to save that for a weeknight, when hopefully the line-ups for the change rooms aren’t as ridic.

Even if the clothes aren’t of the greatest quality, they’re nice enough to keep up with the latest trends without having to shell out too much moolah! I for one am glad that we finally have one, though I’m sure Costa Blanca (which opened up right across from it) might feel differently...(they just need to move to another part of the mall I think). But finally, us Winnipeg girls won't have to travel to Minneaps or Edmonton to look for cute, party clothes!

Now, if only we could get that pesky Ikea opened…

Glee: Let's talk about sex, baby (or "Celibacy, ladies! Dig it!")

Hola amigos! After a one week hiatus Glee came back last night and I don’t know if it was the “Bee’s Knee’s” per se, but it definitely was about the birds and the bees! (Ba-dum-ching! I’m here all week folks!)

Likes
Yay! My "bff" Gwynnie is back as the carefree Ms. Holly Holiday! AWE-SOME! She comes back to sub as the Sex Ed teacher and it seems she’s come back just in time! She informs Mr. Schue that perhaps his Glee kids are not so informed on the subject of Teen Sex. (ie. Finn:“Cucumbers give you AIDS?” Mercedes: “I just had some in my salad!” and Brittany thinking she was prego because a stork set up a nest outside her window. Oh, honey.) Holly asks Will if she can “hide the vegetables” (Ba-dum-ching!) as per Jessica Seinfeld’s cookbook, by singing (instead of lecturing) about it, during a hilarious Jazzercise class, where she also utters a great line: “That’s a waste of some fine man butt”.

I enjoyed her first song “Do You Wanna Touch Me” because it was kind of like the same opening energy as “Forget You” (though, dare I say, not as much pizzazz? Perhaps I’m biased because I SO LOVED her first episode on Glee that nothing else can quite compare to it?! Probably.) It was good nonetheless and I thought Mr. Schu’s “Too much?” sign was subtle and funny.

Later the Warblers sing “Animal” to some private school girls to check their “swoon quotient”. Eh, it was not that great, but I have to say the performance (for me at least) was saved by Kurt’s awesomely awful “sex faces”. Apparently Blaine notices these facial contortions as well and finds out that on the subject of sex, Kurt does not want to talk about it. Blaine goes to talk to Mr. Hummel (I LOVE Burt Hummel!) who gives Kurt (and us) the uncomfortable, but strangely comforting? “sex talk” that we wish all our parents had the courage to give us. (Well maybe not “wish” our parents had given to us…I’m just sayin – it was a good talk). Again, can I just say how much I adore Kurt’s dad and his relationship with Kurt. It’s just so full of love and understanding. Beautiful!

Speaking of beautiful – the trio of Santana, Holly and Brittany singing “Landslide” was just that! It was a gorgeous simple song (a song, I must say, I never really liked until now). It made me melancholy and sad and Santana(!) made me cry too! (BTW, loved her 70’s boho chic outfit, which I plan to bite and sport this spring. I just need me some brown suede platform clogs...) But wait, Santana’s gay now? Eh, Okay. Even though I was slightly surprised about this turn of events (I always thought the Santana/Brittany lady kisses were just “for fun” or at least for the benefit of boy fantasies everywhere) I thought her sexual confusion and fear of being “labeled” were quite realistic (see Scary Football bully guy) and her proclaiming her love for Brittany but being rejected (as sweetly as possible, on Brittany’s part) broke my heart as well…sniffle.

Also, “Kiss” as a tango? Eh, I’ll buy it. I’m also glad to know that perhaps we will be seeing Holly at least one more time (?) as they left us with the possibility of a romance with her and Will. Though Emma’s admission that she still may have feelings for the Schue-ster may complicate things…well, technically I guess, it’s already complicated.

Dislikes
So this week, Zices tells us (and Puck) that she wants to become famous a la Kim Kardashian and as such decides that she wants to make a sex tape. (What happened to “taking it slow”?!) After, Holly informs them that making and owning such a thing constitutes as child porn and they could get arrested, a responsible Puck actually thinks (with his actual head) about the consequences and tells Lauren so! And even though she calls him a nerd, he sticks by his decision. But just when you think he’s become too good, he says this line which I seriously LOL’d on: “ I like you Lauren. I like wooing you. Next to dropping my afternoon deuce, it’s the best part of my day.” And just like that, Puck is back to being Puck and all is right with the world.

I’m irritated about the Quinn/Finn reuniting thing. I hate to say it, but Finn is a hypocrite (though he is a FINE lookin one) Come on, he was so hurt about Rachel “cheating” (I want to say “they were on a break!”) and now he’s all kissy-kissy, hickey-hickey with Quinn?? Uh…nuh. I like the Quinn-Sam pairing better and the Finn-Rachel pairing even better (it gives one hope that the popular quarterback can still love the unpopular, nerdy girl). Why did they build us up to that, if they were just gonna end it just like that? BOO.

And speaking of ending…is this the last of the Stamos?? Say it isn’t so!! Every week we’ve been hoping for the return of the sexy Dr. Carl and now, finally an episode entitled “Sexy” and we get him singing “Afternoon Delight”? I mean, sure it was hilariously over the top and I did think the big screen shots of desserts (“A nooner is when you have dessert in the middle of the day, right?!” ) were perfect AND the outfits were totally Partridge family/hootenanny worthy, but come on! Uncle Jesse deserves better than this! He was under-utilized AND misused. And really, Emma? You haven’t consummated your 4-month marriage yet? Have you LOOKED at him?! I guess running the celibacy club was more realistic than we thought. She must be wearing those charms herself.

Next week: The return of Queen Quinn and Regionals!

And now….as Holly would say “If you’ll excuse me, I’m off to have some crazy sex, because I’m crazy informed!” (Just kidding! This is a family friendly blog, kids!)
Adios until next time...

It's the chicken's feet!

So I was reading past posts and I noticed that I like to say "It's SO good. It's AWESOME. I love, love, LOVE it!" a lot. Not being content with such redundancy, I decided to embark on a "new expression" journey - ie. different ways to express my appreciation or love for something rather than the usual "That's cool" throwback line I always use.

So, I thought I'd try out "It's the Bees Knees!".

You may be wondering why I thought of this one. Well, as you know, Academy Awards season has just passed. And as you all probably know, Natalie Portman won the Best Actress Oscar for "Black Swan" (which I still have to see, btw. I hear it's slightly "disturbing") Anyways, being the darling of the awards show circuit, she was always being interviewed. I happened to catch one of her interviews where she said that someone (I think it was the director) was the "bee's knees". For some reason, I couldn't get this expression out of my head. This morning I decided to google it (as I like to do sometimes) so I could find out the origin of this interesting phrase. Apparently there are a number of definitions and origins in the Urban Dictionary, but this is the one I like the best:

The Bee's Knees: The absolute best. From the English phrase the "B's 'n E's" meaning the "be all end all."

Love it!! (oops) It's AWESOME! (oops!)

Anyhoo, this got me curious about other expressions:
There's "the cat's pajamas" which also has a whole bunch of meanings but basically means "the best". Similarly, "the cat's whiskers" and the "cat's meow" (what's with all the cat references? This leads me to believe, someone who loved their cat, made all of these up.) There's also "the dog's bollocks" which I assume was made up to pacify all those dog owners who didn't care for all the cat expressions.

Then there were the expressions that didn't catch on:
"the eel's ankle" (because really, eels don't even have feet)
"the elephant's instep" (which probably took too long to say and to think about)
and "the snake's hip" (like is the snake hip? or do they mean the snake's actual hip?)

So. After all this time-wasting research I've decided that even though I enjoy the expression "the bee's knees" and I love, love, LOVE the origin, I'm going to stick to what I know because sometimes saying something is SO good or AWESOME is still totally cool.
